Hey skinny scary puppy,

First check that you have OSCulator 2.10-rc1 (most recent version), and delete the incoming /midi/cc/49/1 message to let it be automatically recreated. This version takes care of routing back to multiple sources.

This desk is great and i can control over MIDI using touchosc and osculatory..

However, as osculator seems currently limited to CC messages and not NRPN, I am limited with how much I can access.

Is there a possibility of NRPN functionality in the future????

Hi there

I am currently enjoying setting up my Ipad to control my Yamaha LS9 mixing console.......

As osculator doesnt seem to process NRPN messages as yet, I am limited to the basic 127 (or so) Midi CC values that can be assigned in SETUP to various functions.

I have set up a 3 page set up :

Page 1 is 31x fader control of rack GEQ1 with a MIX 1 fader
Page 2 is 31x fader control of rack GEQ2 with a MIX 2 fader
Page 3 is 16x INPUT Channel Faders + 8x MIX Faders + 8x MATRIX Faders

Everything works great and I have full control of the desk (great for room EQing remotely!)

However, my problem is that when I move a fader that is mapped on 2x TouchOSC pages, such as MIX1 level, which is on pages 1 and 3, it is only the fader on page three that is updated.

The MIDI CC message coming back in (in this case 49) routes back internally to MIXFADER1 on page three, but I can not seem to duplicate this OSC routing so that it also updates the MIXFADER1 on page one!!!!

Am I missing a simple trick or method to duplicate returning OSC routing???? Have looked in vain and am hoping someone might have encountered a similar problem

Hi Modul8tor,

There are very good questions, I hope these answers will provide good guidance:

1. First of all the reason why presets assignments are not updated is to avoid changes that fall outside your control. If you need to reflect your new presets change assignments in other presets, copy (Command-C) the relevant messages from one preset, and paste them in another one (Command-V).

Change by index has been thought to work directly with input from MIDI Program Changes, or from OSC messages whose argument is a number between 0 (first preset) to N-1, where N is the count of presets.

So, if you want to use TouchOSC to change a preset by index, you must make TouchOSC send a message with the right value, or scale that value to match the preset number as previously described. Here are two solutions:

A. With the last version of TouchOSC, you can set the output range of a control. So if you want to have a button that switches to the 3rd preset, in TouchOSC Editor, set the Value Range "From: 2 to: 2".

B. Alternatively, you can also do that in OSCulator. Switch to the Scalings Page, and modify the Output Min/Max parameters to the same value, 2. To reflect that change in other presets, you will have to delete the corresponding messages, and paste the updated one which is not very practical. For some reason, the current version (2.10-rc1) has a bug that prevents from properly copy/pasting the scaling parameters on existing messages (that will be fixed in a future update).

On the other hand, if you want to use MIDI Program Changes to change a preset by index, this is more simple: simply send the specified program changes on the same channel, and assign a "Presets/Change by index" event to the /midi/program/x message. In order to send a program change from Live, you just have to create an empty clip on a dedicated MIDI track, and set the Program parameter to the desired value. If you want to send another program change, create another clip, and set to another Program value.

2. That is correct, parameter assignments and values are two mutually exclusive concepts. For simplicity, I thought that it would be better to start with something that is easy to use but not super powerful. In the future, I will provide a way to manage "snapshots" which is a feature similar to presets, but only for managing messages values.
Now, it would be certainly nice to choose the state of "Send values on preset change" on a per-preset basis. I will think about this …

3. It sounds like your device is connected to a WiFi network through a wireless router. If you use a direct connection (ad-hoc WiFi network), you should not experience drop outs. The procedure to create an ad-hoc network is outlined here.

Best,

In the latest version of osculator you implemented presets which send the actual value of the presets to the target destination. I like it very much!

While implementing i came across the following suggestions for presets handling:

1. Actually, the presets must be changed with the <switch to> parameter or the <change by index> Switch to means you have to have a line in every preset for every other preset, and it's not auto-updating, e.g. if there are new presets, old presets do not get updated. Change by index did never work for me.
Do I miss something here? how could I concretely trigger a Osculator preset with <switch to> from a ableton live session clip/row? Could I use midi program changes to solve this?

2. Can parameters be excluded from presets saving? I have some areas where it would make sense to exclude them from sending their values upon preset selection, even though the rest of the values are sent.

3. Apart from that: Sometimes my iPad gets its values not updated, even though i can SEND the values to osculator. My setup is: iPad - Osculator - Ableton (midi ports track & remote ON for both osculator input & output)

I highly appreciate your inputs

Did the Reason 4.0.1 update. I guess i could break this down with some more specific questions:
1) If i am attempting to trigger Redrum hits, should my OSCulator settings be set to MIDI CC or MIDI Note. If MIDI Note, then does it matter a) what Value i have set and b) what Channel i have set
2) What should my Reason Advanced Control look like? How about my Keyboard and Control (i tried both MIDI Multichannel Control Surface and MIDI Multichannel Control Keyboard. Seems like one is for MIDI CC and the other is for MIDI Note. Correct me if i'm wrong!)

I think that's it... i'm sure i'm wrong though.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Yeah. I'm wondering if on the Reason rack, i'm not running the midi out properly through the Advanced Midi Device (do i even need that device on the rack?!), although i feel like i've tried every option. It's weird because when i manually click on the sample in the sequencer window, it records what i trigger. Is there some patch that i need maybe or an extra script?

Hello-
I need some assistance in finishing setting up TouchOSC/OSCulator/iPad. Here's where i'm at: Reason 4 is recognizing the iPad and TouchOSC (it triggers the Redrum sounds) but the sounds don't record when i try and record them. I feel like there is one small thing i'm missing (or perhaps large. i'm new to this so i have no idea).
If you need any further info on how my setup is, lemme know.

With a proper email client you should not have any problem sending OSCulator or TouchOSC files.
However, it is always a good practice to put your files into a zip archive to ensure they are properly decoded after passing through the numerous email servers on the net.

Hi Cam,
Yes, of course. Do you need my email address or can you get it from the admin section of the forum?

When I was having the problem, yes I only had one version installed. It was the first time I'd used the program and I figured I'd just try out the latest beta version since it was an "RC". It wasn't till after I had played around with it for several hours and figured out the work around of having multiple windows open that I installed the "stable" version which seems to work fine.

I now have both versions on my computer but I never run the program by double clicking on the OSCulator patch documents. I always do an open or just let OSCulator reopen the document it last had open when it runs.

Let me know if you need my email address.

Hi,

I'm sorry but I can't report a lot of progress on that side.

I am able to connect and decode data from a wireless DualShock 3 remote, and by making the assumption it will be basically the same for the other Sony devices, I guess that it should not be too much work to support the remote and the Guitar Hero drums and guitar. Making all this work is unfortunately not where the most effort needs to be done.

First of all, I would like to work on a user interface to manage the availability and connection of those devices. I am aware that support of HID devices has been a long standing wish from the users, and I will eventually bring a good support for this feature.

Hey Loop,

It seems those parameters actually have fixed values, instead of relative addressing (like -32 / +32). So, it looks like the different values (all kinds of waveforms, octaves from e.g. -4 to +4), are spreaded across the MIDI range of 0 to 127. This is why it works with a rotary, just like it would with a fader, you are simply browsing the set of values.

Here's what you can do:
- Use rotary to control of parameter,
- Open a Quick Look window to see what is the value sent when the parameter changes, write down that value.
- Now instead of the rotary, use a button this time and register it in OSCulator, then assign the MIDI CC you were using previously.
- Switch to the Scalings Page (View->Flip to Scalings Page), and change set the Output Min and Output Max fields to the value to wrote down. This will make that button only output the same value when pressed and depressed. You may need to round that value up or down a bit, there is no need to be super precise.

I hope this will help.

Hey,

I don't know the reason why your faders are resetted every time you change the page.
It would great if you could give a more detailed description of the TouchOSC layout and OSCulator document you are using: for example, do you have the same faders on multiple pages and you would like to have them control the same target?

I don't think there is any "bad communication".
Taken out of context, this statement does not mean something useful to me.

Oh dear... - ha ha! That's why it wouldn't work... I was feeling pretty lame about it, but it's nice to know it's not me (except for that I missed this detail in the TouchOSC documentation)

Thanks Camille! Now I'm looking in to sending OSC messages to a global controller instead.

Hi guys,

i use the touchosc on an ipodtouch and it's all right but i have this little stupid problem

when i switch from page to page the faders don't maintain the same position and i have to move one more time "all the faders" to have the right position. this happen with traktor and ableton.

i read on the NI traktor forum that this is the bad comunication of midi CC with OSC protocol??????????

it's right?
if no i hope someone have news for me

thanks 4 the attention

Hi there,

I m currently working on TouchOSC Templates to control Reasons Synth and Effect Devices. Faders, Knobs and Toggle Buttons work flawlessly. As i started working on Subtractors Oscillator Settings i stumbled across a problem. Waveform, Octave and Tuning Semi/Cent are diplayed as up/down buttons (See: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_popup&article=pop_subtractor). Controlling these values with rotaries works but i'd like to configure them as buttons according to the "real" interface. Is it possible to send e.g. values like +32 and -32 with osculator?

Greetings from Switzerland

Thanks Mark!
Just to make things a bit clearer, I understand that you solution requires to assign Key commands to TouchOSC buttons in OSCulator beforehand.

Hey Lowell,

In TouchOSC, you can't send messages with a "MIDI" typed argument. OSCulator doesn't send a program change message encapsulated in OSC to Kyma, but a native command on the FireWire bus.

Hi Camille (and all)

I enjoy how easy you've made it for me to access Kyma program changes through OSCulator - no issues there. But now, I'm making things harder on myself - unfortunately, I need to bypass OSCulator and send these program changes directly in to a Pacarana from an iPad running TouchOSC.

I'm sure you've handled this before, but I've been pulling my hair out. If you or anyone else could just help me with the syntax for a button that would send program change 128 (the dice) to the Pacarana on MIDI channel 1, I think I could figure out the other program change messages...

Will I need to use anything along these lines?

It's actually a little easier than that.
1. With touchOSC and OSCulator running, start Logic 9
2. Then open the Key Commands window (Option-k or Preferences->Key Commands)
3. In the Key Commands window, open the Global Commands section.
4. Select the first command you want to map to TouchOSC
5. Click the "Learn New Assignment" button in the lower right corner of the window.
6. Then touch/move/etc the control in TouchOSC.
7. This does not replace the current mapping but just adds the TouchOSC one.

Just repeat steps 4-6 for every key command you want. For instance, in the Mix 16 template, I mapped the 5 buttons at the bottom of the first page to:
1. Back to Beginning
2. Stop
3. Play
4. Pause
5. Record

Later!
